- The next step for fighting Foxwoods
Posted by Casino-Free Philly on September 8, 2010
Foxwoods casino backers are still out busking for an investor. Developers are now openly talking about the casino as being "years away," if it gets built at all. And the casino is under threat of license revocation from the Gaming Control Board for lacking any real plans.
The next step for fighting Foxwoods is to keep investors away by demonstrating sustained opposition to SugarHouse.
On Sept. 23, we're launching a campaign to shut down SugarHouse, and with your help, we can help Philadelphia realize its true potential for a sustainable economy that doesn't rely on a predatory industry bent on making our neighbors gambling addicts.
And we know potential Foxwoods investors are looking to the reception SugarHouse receives in deciding where to place their bets.
In short: Taking action against SugarHouse helps keep Foxwoods from ever becoming more than a pipe dream.

Planning for SugarHouse's Opening Day: Tuesday, Sept. 14 (sign up)
We'll be outlining our plans for our campaign launch in detail at this meeting, occuring from 6 to 8 PM at the No Slots Spot in Center City. If you want to be closely involved in the events of opening day, this is the place for you to be. Everyone is invited, regardless of your involvement in the anti-casino movement so far. We have a place for everyone, and you're welcome to attend!
Memorial Service for Our City: Monday, Sept. 20 (sign up)
We will be marking what's been lost in our communities and our city with the opening of SugarHouse casino at 7 PM in front of the SugarHouse site in Fishtown. We'll mourn a riverfront opportunity for a park or community center, the promise of true economic development rather than a job-killing predatory business, elected officials who represent their constituents' wishes and the residential character of the Fishtown neighborhood. And we'll also be acknowledging our sadness for the families and individuals who will lose their savings, their houses and even their lives because of predatory gambling in their community.
Leaders of a variety of faith communities will help us mark the occasion, on a night in which SugarHouse will host VIP guests by invitation only. If you are a member of a faith community and would like to participate in this service, please reply to this email and let us know.
In the midst of our sadness, we will hold forth the promise of community power, as we move forward into a campaign to shut down SugarHouse and hold off Foxwoods. With your help, our city can once again achieve its true potential, despite the best efforts of developers and politicians to damage Philly for their own personal gain.
Launch of the Campaign to Shut Down SugarHouse: Thursday, Sept. 23 (sign up)
At 12:00 noon we will launch our campaign to shut down SugarHouse casino.
They are opening 30 months late, at one-third the originally planned size and with huge community opposition. On the day we open, we'll continue our opposition through an organized campaign to close the casino.
We'll be announcing details about the events on this day in the near future. If you'd like to be involved, please sign up to volunteer.
We need your support
In addition to volunteering your time, we will be limited in what we can do without financial support from people like you. Please consider making a contribution to help us fight predatory gambling.
With your help, we'll be able to fight SugarHouse and hold off Foxwoods all at once. We hope you'll join us!
