- Help make Philly Harrah's-free
Posted by Casino-Free Philly on July 16, 2010
Because of the hard work you have done to expose the predatory tactics of the gambling industry, the Foxwoods casino project has been falling apart for months. When Vegas gambling tycoon Steve Wynn wanted to take over the project, our vocal opposition to his indifference for our community pushed him out of town.
Now it's time to do it again.
Harrah's Entertainment, the largest gambling company in the country, wants to take over Foxwoods -- and we must stop them. We can only do it with your support.
Please make a contribution to Casino-Free Philadelphia to ensure a Harrah's-Free Philadelphia.
Harrah's is the largest gambling company because it is the industry leader in predatory tactics.
Gary Loveman, CEO of Harrah's Entertainment, only cares about his customers so long as they are profitable. He cares so little about people, in fact, that he has been quoted as saying, "We [at Harrah's] know what every customer is worth ... We reward customers for spending in ways that add to their value." Harrah's has such advanced tracking technology on its customers, that, for example, if a player starts playing slower on a slot machine, computers alert floor managers to give them free alcohol.
To learn more about Loveman's predatory practices, please read Isaiah Thompson's startling article "What You're Worth" in this week's Citypaper.
Not only does Harrah's prey on its customers, it also believes itself to be above Pennsylvania's casino law. According to Act 71, no person or company who owns a casino in Pennsylvania can own more than 30% of another casino in the state. Harrah's Entertainment already owns and operates a casino in Chester, PA, yet the company is continuing to pursue a deal with Foxwood's other investors. Though Harrah's couldn't own a significant percentage of the Foxwood's casino, it is expecting to propose a deal that would allow it to utilize its predatory tactics by developing and managing the casino. Read Jennifer Lin's latest article in the Philadelphia Inquirer for more about Harrah's maneuvering.
